Blessed with mystical and sacred properties, it was held in the highest esteem as one of the most precious essential oils by ancient populaces in Egypt, the Middle East and Rome. Botanically not too far removed from valerian (minus the ghastly odor, natch), it's known to have powerful calming and relaxing properties---though it's uplifting and peaceful as well. (Really!)
